5 – Americans to Play for Newcastle United

In light of the recent signing of American-born DeAndre Yedlin we decided to take a look into the archives and see who of American descent has played for Newcastle United over the years. Here they are…

Brad Friedel

1997: 0 apps, 0 goals.

We very nearly excluded Brad from this list, due to having never played a game for the club but come the start of the 94/95 campaign he was on loan from the USSF training with Kevin Keegan’s side ahead of a transfer, only to have his work permit cancelled. Several failed work permits later, he’d eventually sign for Liverpool in 1997 and become a regular figure in Premier League football for years to come.

Jim Crawford

1995-1998: 2 apps, 0 goals.

Remember Jim Crawford? No, me neither, but unlike Friedel he did make 2 competitive appearances for the club. The American born, Irish midfielder was at the club for 3 years in-between 1995-98. He later went on to see out the majority of his career in Ireland, spending 7 years and over 180 appearances for Irish side Shelbourne FC.

Giuseppe Rossi

2006: 13 apps, 1 goal.

Signed on loan from Manchester United, the young forward Giuseppe made 13 appearances for NUFC during the 06/07 season, netting once. Born to Italian parents, Rossi was born in Teaneck, New Jersey making him the third American to don the black and white stripes. He was later deemed surplus to requires at MUFC and has since spent time at Villareal, Fiorentina & Levante (loan).

Oguchi Onyewu

2007: 11 apps, 0 goals.

Born in Washington DC, Oguchi has travelled around the world and featured heavily for the USA national team. The athletic centre-back joined NUFC from on loan in 2007 from Standard Liege to form a partnership with Titus Bramble; a shambolic pairing which ultimately cost him his place in the side and return to the Belgian side (Sam Allardyce having opted not to make the deal permanent)

DeAndre Yedlin

2016 to date: 1 app, goals (as of 19/8/16)

The latest and 5th American to date to sign for NUFC, Yedlin joined us for an estimated £5m in August 2016 as Rafa Benitez’s 9th summer signing. The athletic full-back was born in Seattle, Washington and has played for Seattle Sounders, Spurs & SAFC to date.
